Victory over the sun

2011 during rehearsals for our production “Everything" we found some hand-typed pages of a libretto in a shabby studio on the outskirts of the city. The title was "Victory over the Sun" and the description said “Opera of the Future”. When we started to read through it, we began to imagine - half in jest, half seriously – that one day we would stage this "opera of the future", which premiered in St. Petersburg in 1913 and was only performed twice due to its scandalous failure.
2025/2026 the time has come. The fact that there is basically no existing script or play is very convenient for us: Many elements, in fact the largest part of the opera are lost. Any reconstruction can only be a transcription from our imagination. Since the music is also completely lost, we comissioned the Israeli composer Maya Dunietz to develop new music in collaboration with the Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop. The painter Wu Zhi and the engineer Andrei Trofimow will accompany the project with their visual work. Our old brothers andsisters in arts from von Krahl theater in Tallin/Estonia will accompany us. And as accompaniment alone would be too boring for them and as meanwhile they have taken over the theater themselves they will produce the thing together with us.

So let's begin at the beginning:

FIRST ACT
White with black. Walls white, floor black. Two futurist Kraftmenschen tear the curtain apart.

KRAFTMENSCH ONE
All's well that begins well!

KRAFTMENSCH TWO
And the end?

KRAFTMENSCH ONE
There will be no end!

(They sing)

We sink the mountains.
Sun, you gave birth to passion
And burned with ignited steel.
We will cover you with a dusty blanket
And lock you up in a house of concrete.
