Showcase Beat Le Mot
The four-piece performance group Showcase Beat Le Mot was founded in 1997 out of the Applied Theater Studies program in Giessen. As a strategy to avoid making theater the members of Showcase Beat Le Mot talk to each other a lot. They cook and push armchairs and sofas together to create landscapes where spectators can relax while they wait for a start. Meanwhile, they argue with the health&safety departement about open fires, cigarettes, warm alcohol and exploding vegetables. When they rehearse, it looks like they are asleep, and vice versa. What is written already exists, and what is performed exists somewhere on the internet. So they make up riddles for the audience or play games like blind-fold soccer. They leave the theater doors open to allow a constant draught and to avoid that thoughts crash onto the stage like frozen chunks. They like the past and the future. They learn from one and dream of the other. They don't believe in the present, because the concept of linear time is just a nasty trick to enslave people and force them to get up early. They set up a bed at the edge of time and make home for changing topics under the blankets. If they are too long, they are shortened. If they are too short, they are lengthened. Once the group starts moving, it rumbles down the hills like a medieval siege tower and can no longer be stopped by any shape or form of building. The result is art without commission, but with message - a message in a bottle, a warning or a song.
